new phyrexia

So this weekend was the New Phyrexia prerelease. NPH is pretty damn fun, honestly. There are a lot of new cards that really mix up the limited format. I don’t feel like writing about all my events, so I’ll just summarize random stuff here. I played in 2 sealed prerelease events (3 SOM, 3 NPH) and 2 two-headed giant events (4 SOM, 4 NPH), which is good for learning the set but this will not be the format for the big limited events (read: GPs). I went 2-2 in both sealed events, despite having a ridiculous deck in the 2nd one (Phyrexian Obliterator plus colorless Clone? On top of 7 single-red removal spells? Sign me up!).

Went 2-1 and 3-0 respectively in the 2HG events. First one we had no bombs and mediocre decks, so we relied mostly on tight play and good draws. Second one, Dan C. was my partner and he opened up ridiculous in NPH (Urabrask, foil Torpor Orb, Hex Parasite, Elesh Norn, Fresh Meat; I opened jank in SOM), we won off the ridiculousness that is Elesh Norn and Hex Parasite + walls and proliferdrake + 5/5 blue infect walls. Elesh Norn wipes their board and makes all their attacks bad, Hex Parasite makes all our x/4 blockers ridiculous against Infect, and proliferdrake says “You have a very short clock!” when we’re proliferating twice on their end step into stuff like Shrine of Piercing Vision and Trigon of Infestation.

Other notes:

  • Golem tribal deck is fun as hell if you can pull it off
  • Geth’s Verdict is a very good card if it prevents your opponents from mind-controlling your Elesh Norn
  • Fresh Meat is the ideal anti-Wrath card in limited, especially when you’ve got Insect tokens
  • Playing lots of Phy-mana creatures against Infect decks is really worth it
  • Nihil Spellbombs have gone way up in value with Entomber Exarch and Remember the Fallen joining the format
  • Shrine of Piercing Vision for your whole deck is a really funny thing to see
  • Asceticism is completely unfair in 2HG
