planeswalker control is like turbofog for rich people

Seriously. Played in the Nationals Qualifiers today, I ran Boss Naya + Vengevines, which completely rocked every other matchup, but I had to play 3x PW control, so my final record was 4-2-1 (the draw was with an incompetent PW control player; he had me dead on the board for like 6 turns but instead opted to: 1- keep my Vengevine tapped forever with Ajani, 2- force my creatures to attack Gideon up to 16 loyalty while he chumped with 8 Coup tokens that could have killed me, and 3- Fateseal me a bunch. Then he resolved and got off Luminarch Ascension and *finally* killed me like 8 turns later).

The problem is that, in order to beat other matchups reliably, 7 slots in my board have to be dedicated to creature-hell decks (2 Stoneforge Mystic, 1 Basilisk Collar, 4 Cunning Sparkmage), while the other half is dedicated to control (2x Manabarbs, 2x Qasali Pridemage, 3x Dauntless Escort). My last slot was Bojuga Bog, for OtV/Time Sieve, but of course I didn’t play it all day. Vengevine is ridiculously good, though. Still doesn’t deserve to be mythic, but it’s the real deal, a nightmare for control. If only I got more Bloodbraids off, then I might’ve won more games. But of course, I never drew them when I needed them :(

Next week is RoE game day; I’ll probably flesh out my UB control deck and playtest that, otherwise I might go for Naya again with 4x Manabarbs for control.

Here’s the list I played:

4x Noble Hierarch

2x Birds of Paradise

4x Wild Nacatl

1x Scute Mob

1x Goblin Bushwhacker

4x Knight of the Reliquary

4x Bloodbraid Elf

3x Ranger of Eos

3x Vengevine

1x Thornling

1x Behemoth Sledge

3x Oblivion Ring

2x Path to Exile

3x Lightning Bolt

5x Forest

2x Plains

2x Mountain

4x Arid Mesa

3x Misty Rainforest

1x Terramorphic Expanse

1x Evolving Wilds

1x Tectonic Edge

1x Sejiri Steppe

2x Stirring Wildwood

2x Raging Ravine
